The Golden Rule would have us treat others as we’d like to be treated ourselves. While it often guides clinical care, it is limited by having to rely on our own worldviews. The Platinum Rule extends beyond the Golden Rule, insisting that we “do unto patients as they would want done unto themselves”, hence prioritizing person-centered care. The Platinum Rule forces us to confront our own biases, to value the patient’s perspective, resulting in treatment decisions that are consistent with patients’ personal needs and goals of care.
